GALLOWAY AND SOUTHERN AYRSHIRE BIOSPHERE

The Adventure Centre for Education (ACE) has been deeply involved in the development and ongoing success of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere. From the initial consultation phase, ACE has played a significant role in shaping the vision of this unique region. Chris Saunders, one of ACE’s key figures, has served as a trustee of the Biosphere for the past seven years, bringing invaluable insights and dedication to the project.

As one of the first organizations to receive the Biosphere Certification Mark, ACE has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the principles of sustainability and community engagement that the Biosphere represents. This certification is a testament to our alignment with the Biosphere’s goals of conserving natural resources, supporting local economies, and promoting environmental education.

Our involvement extends beyond local initiatives. ACE has participated in international exchanges, sharing our expertise in social enterprise and sustainable tourism. Notably, we attended trips to Tuscany to discuss the role of social enterprises within the Biosphere framework at the Appennino Tosco Emiliano Biosphere Reserve. Additionally, we joined a delegation to Finland to explore and discuss tourism initiatives in the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve, bringing back valuable insights to enhance our own programs and contribute to the Biosphere’s development.

In addition to our ongoing involvement, ACE has also actively supported the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere by participating in and helping to host group visits to the region. These events have provided valuable opportunities to showcase the unique environmental and cultural assets of the Biosphere, and we have played a crucial role in facilitating these experiences. Whether leading guided tours, delivering educational sessions, or coordinating activities, ACE has ensured that visitors gain a deep understanding of the region’s commitment to sustainability and community-driven initiatives. Our contributions to these events highlight our dedication to promoting the Biosphere’s values and enhancing its reputation as a model for sustainable development.

Recently, ACE was honored to speak at the Blue Biosphere launch, where we shared our innovative Blue Hub Health initiative. This program, along with the coordination and launch in June 2024 of the South Ayrshire Snorkel Trail, emphasises the health benefits of engaging with marine environments, aligning perfectly with the Biosphere’s focus on sustainable use of natural resources.

Through these efforts, ACE has supported the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, helping to foster a community that values and actively contributes to environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and social well-being. We remain committed to supporting the Biosphere’s vision and ensuring its continued success.
